Life is Strange: Before the Storm is a graphic adventure video game, developed by Deck Nine and published by Square Enix in 2017. It is the second instalment in the Life is Strange series, but is actually a prequel, set three years before the events that transpired in the first game. Players take control of a 16-year-old Chloe Price, one of the central characters from Life is Strange, and progress through three separate episodes. The storyline centres on Chloe’s relationship with her friend, Rachel Amber, while branching dialogue options and other decisions can affect the way the story develops.
Life is Strange: Before the Storm does not make use of the time travel ability that was possessed by the first game’s protagonist, Max Caulfield, which allowed decisions to be undone or re-done. Instead, with players now controlling Chloe, the equivalent key feature is the new ‘Backtalk’ option.Essentially, this is a kind of risk versus reward dialogue feature, which fits in perfectly with Chloe’s outspoken personality and quick wit. The backtalk function can be used to allow Chloe to talk her way out of difficult situations the player may encounter, but can also potentially make certain situations worse. Ultimately, however, the gameplay is similar to the original Life is Strange and will feel immediately familiar to anyone who played through the first instalment. Once again, players must solve puzzles to progress through the story, while the decisions made will have lasting and sometimes unfixable consequences.
