Eastshade is a first-person, non-violent adventure set in a world full of quests. The gamer plays as an artist who is shipwrecked near a small coastal village called Lyndor. Your first interaction is with a young kind champ who allows you to rest in his homely cave until you have recovered. You then resume your painting quest as you explore the ins and outs of the breath-taking Eastshade countryside. The gameplay is pretty straightforward as it involves a simple setup where you pay tribute to a lost loved one, or giving a kind gesture, you carry out in the course of the game.

The Gameplay

Its gameplay is familiar to players who have tried an open-world RPG. You need to familiarise yourself with the environment, and you can only do this by talking to NPCs who will acquaint you with Eastshade’s history and favourite joints in the village. You then embark on a personal adventure to unlock a quest. Along the way, you will meet a child who aspires to be a painter and asks you to help her buy art supplies, a merchant pursuing a romantic quest and a park ranger who needs your assistance in catching a wounded waterfox. You also meet plenty of mute NPCs filling the streets.

The Adventure

Your mission is to find the next person in the quest chain, and you may need to use your painting skills. Once the locals discover your skills, they are quick to commission you to create paintings for them. A particular art-lover will commission you to paint a picture of a chicken. This brings more adventure as you set out to the market where you had spotted some chickens.

You also get to interact with a pompous villager who asks you to paint his portrait and capture his ascribed heroism and nobility. When painting, you only need to drag the mouse frame on the screen; it captures the subject and reproduces it on the canvas. Each commission describes the painting, and it’s up to you to decide what you want to include in the frame. Some commissions are easy to create; the challenging part is in finding its location in the village.
